Autumn of the Patriarch or Unfathomable Awe of Alchemist Solitude

Alchemist is a general term to describe an inventor, someone who tries to create something seemingly impossible. Someone, who practices untraditional way of thinking to achieve an impossible task. Alchemy is an deep-rooted philosophical and scientific method that combines multiple scientific disciplines. Alchemists played a substantial role in early science development, particularly in chemistry and medicine. Alchemy was rathe an art than a scientific methodology that we know today. Modern definition of alchemy focuses on its exoteric practical applications and its esoteric spiritual aspects. That is why this picture has interpolation of a spiritual aspect such as a cathedral like looking castle, formidable sculptural portrait, and geometric elements as well.

It is hard to describe a surreal concept of this picture. It was built rather on emotional consciousness than clear impression. In a way, the Alchemist is an ordinary story of a slowly aging and decaying man who feels that the world around him and his mind are crumbling and falling apart. He is still full of energy and inventive desires, but he senses that the creative edge of his youth gradually fades away. The memory of his previous achievements is pressing him to create more, but the reality of the age limitations is dragging him down. He is tormented by the thoughts that his glorious years are over and he is not able to rise to the previous self anymore. His solitude, mind dungeon is that he cannot share realization of his fall with anybody since he truly does not believe yet that it is happening to him.

I named this artwork Autumn of the Patriarch due to a certain similarities of loneliness and lost power that has been portrayed in the well-known eponymous novel written by Gabriel García Marquez. The sculpture by Michel-Ange Slodtz – Chryses of Troy, in my view, was the most suitable one to depict the idea that I was trying to convey.
