Fall of Lucifer Pieta: Gods and Heroes series: surreal art-print, poster, book, desktop-wallpaper NeoSurrealismArt.com
Here I would like to make a very important note: neither the picture itself nor the commentary were intended as an insult to believers or directed against Christianity. I apologize for any misunderstanding that may arise. Lucifer is by far the most notorious and magnetic figure in the history of mankind. His name is associated with a wide range of evildoers such as Satan, Devil, Belial, Evil, Unholy One, Adversary, etc. But what was his transgression in the eyes of God?
Most of us would know this biblical story: “Then there was war in heaven. The Son of God, the Prince of Heaven, and His loyal angels engaged in a conflict with the arch-rebel (Lucifer) and those who united with him. The Son of God and true, loyal angels prevailed; and the arch-rebel and his sympathizers were expelled from heaven.” Here’s what Lucifer and his followers had been fighting for: “He claimed that angels needed no law but should be left free to follow their own will, which would ever guide them right; that law was a restriction of their liberty; and they wanted to abolish law. There was contention among the angels. Lucifer and his sympathizers were striving to reform the government of God. They were discontented and unhappy because they could not look into God’s wisdom and ascertain God’s purposes in exalting His Son (Christ), and endowing Him with such unlimited power and command. They rebelled against the authority of the Son.” This does not really sound like a mortal sin, does it? If you ask me, it sounds more like a discussion on management principles. Might have God overreacted a little bit? But, I suppose, faith defies reasoning. Another question is whether Lucifer and Satan are the same person (or fallen deity, for that matter)? There is no verse or passage in the Bible to prove that; however, many theologians are adamant about their readings of several passages revealing, in their opinion, that Lucifer can be no one but Satan. Let’s take a closer look.
Lucifer is one of the Seraphim (celestial beings). The Latin name Lucifer means “light-bearer” or a “morning star”, and is not mentioned in the New Testament, where the "bearer of light" is only used as a reference to Christ. Since the times described in the New Testament the word Lucifer has often been used as a second name of the Devil, both in religious works and in fiction.
Isaiah 14:12-18 is the only passage in the Bible that mentions a Morning Star, Son of the Dawn. In Christian theological tradition, this verse is proof of the fall of Lucifer. But maybe this passage is just an allusion to a Canaanite myth about Helel, son of the god Shahar, who sought the throne of the Lord and was cast down into the abyss as a punishment?
Ezekiel 28:13-19 has also some relevance to Lucifer. It has been argued, however, that this passage was actually linked to another angel, Nebuchadnezzar.
From the scientific point of view all of the above is a mere speculation, as the archeologists have never been able to either support or refute the theory of angelic rebellion. A myth of the fallen angels continued into a belief that the name Lucifer and Satan or Sataniel can be used interchangeably (in the Second Book of Enoch, for example). Early Christian writers carried on with this identification of Lucifer with Satan. However, many contemporary exorcists and theologians, such as Father Antonio Fortea and Father Gabriele Amorth, assert that Lucifer and Satan are different beings.
I used a model of a famous Pieta (Lament) by a renowned artist Michelangelo Buonarroti to depict the Lucifer’s body struck down from the heavens and being mourned by the unknown (presumably destiny or infinity). Is it possible that the motives of one of the greatest fallen archangels have been misunderstood and his name infamized? Could have time washed away the truth? Could have the second to Christ angel been wrongly accused? I’m still waiting for the answer to come.

I resonate with your thoughts. I don't believe that Lucifer is Satan and vice versa. Bible has been rewritten and translated too many tmes, the information is lost and warped. Your work and comment really made me gather my thoughts on this subject. Thanks

I love this picture and find your meditation on Lucifer very interesting. While I agree that Lucifers motive were not all bad and seem completely reasonable, I believe that is very much an example of the seductiv nature of sin.

I consider myself a born again christian and I think this work is absolutely beautiful. I see a completely different story. I have fallen from God's graces many times in my life, but God was always there to comfort me. This will be hung over my bed.

Also as a Catholic I get some of your religious undertones in the art which help to only enhance and bring profound meanings to certain imagery in your collection.

Jesus referred to Satan (Matt.13:39; Luke 10:18; 11:18). He is called Satan, the Devil (slanderer), Lucifer (son of the morning), Beelzebub (Lord of the flies – Matt.12:24), and Belial (lawless – 2 Cor.6:15), the evil one (1 John 5:19), the tempter...
