The anthropologies of Leiris and Bataille are both focused on the problematic nature of otherness - the hauntingly incomprehensible differences that can exist between mutually alien worlds. Such differences cannot be rationalized or intellectualized in Western terms: the scientific emphasis of anthropology was for them overtly ethnocentric, insensitive and inadequate. Anthropologies which objectify, analyse and dissect humankind destroy its humanity. Through the dissolution of otherness and difference, anthropology demolishes the real value of the people it studies. For Leiris, cultures should be primarily experienced rather than rationally understood: he seeks an empathetic, moral and sensual experience.
